A History of Hospitality
Plank’s on Broadway is located within one of Grove City’s most historic buildings — a longtime gathering place for good drinks, great food, and even better company.
In 1854, Grove City founder William F. Breck constructed the original hotel-saloon as a resting place for stagecoach travelers. The nine-room hotel featured a music room, parlor, and dining room — offering comfort, conversation, and community to those passing through town. The tiger-striped cherry wood bar dates back to the 1880s and still stands today, a quiet witness to generations of memories shared within these walls.
In 1905, the Endres family purchased the property and operated it as a bar for three generations until it was purchased in 1986 by Richard E. Robinson of Grove City. While owned by Robinson, the exterior of the building was restored to its original look, preserving a piece of architectural history.
A new chapter began in 1994 when the Plank family — long recognized for their restaurants in German Village — took ownership of the historic saloon. Their legacy dates back to 1939 when Walter Plank, Sr. founded Plank’s Cafe on Parsons Avenue. In 1960, his sons, Walt and Will, expanded the tradition by opening Plank’s Bier Garten at Whittier and High Street. Continuing that legacy, Bill Plank, one of Will’s sons, brought the family name to Grove City with Plank’s on Broadway, and he continues to manage the location today.
